It May Not Seem Like The Easiest Way

Concentrating on one’s own recovery is called a full-time job.  There are many different extremes that people take when they attempt to make sure that they are focusing on their recovery.  In fact, many often seem to become much more selfish and self-involved than before to those around them.

It can take a while for an individual to adjust to the process of bettering themself while not utilizing any mind altering substance.  Selfishness had already been a way of life, but the addicted individual was usually not as aware of their selfishness as they suddenly start to become while going through the stages of recovery.

Suddenly the addict realizes that if they do not stay sober then they have no chance of succeeding in anything else in life and they have no chance of being certain to be good to anyone else in their life until they fix themself.    They do not initially even know how to fix themself, but are now learning on a daily basis through the process of trial and error in addition to much coaching by others who have done the same thing, if they have chosen to recover with outside assistance.

It takes time for the recovering addict/alcoholic to learn some sense of balance in their life.  Balance does not come naturally to these folk as it was not a previous way of life and may never have been, or so they thought, even in their nature.

Selfishness and wanting what one wants at the moment one wants it are natural childhood behaviors that the addict typically never grew out of.  They fashioned their life around such a way of thinking and behaving, but the recovering addict is the one who is attempting to become aware of the fact that they have a problem, that their life is unmanageable and that they cannot fix it without changing these thought and behavioral patterns.  But it can be a long road to tow for many and dependent upon the nature of their addictive personality, may not seem like a very easy way to live.
